Martine Aballéa

Ultrachrome ink of fine art paper, bright white 310g

5 Editions + 1EA + 1 HC

59.4 x 84.1 cm

Martine Aballéa was born in New-York in 1950, and she lives and works in Paris. Her work includes both decorative and natural imagery: they live in her photographs and are punctuated by colors. This emphasis creates dreamlike, bittersweet surrealness. You must pay attention to every detail in her work: pretty imagines and insignificant images in her work are rarely what they seem.

She is known for her recolored prints, where images and text interweave to create stories. In these installations such as La maison d’en dessous au Narcissio (Nice, 2016), La maison sans n, au Crac Occitanie (2012) ou l’Hôtel Passager, ARC, musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris (1999), the artist creates a piece where fiction is created.

She is represented by the Art Concept Gallery in Paris.

These photographs are a part of the series « Le musée des amours », a fiction story composed like a soap opera of photographs that tells the history of Odile and Marcel traversing the mazes of a literary salon in a museum. They are in space-times thare are parallel, before, and during history of each episode. Martine Aballéa thus offers visitors a new clue to the plot without spoiling the mystery.
